Information about Kenora and Lake of the Woods

Kenora is a thriving community situated in the heart of cottage country, on the north shore of world famous Lake of the Woods. The City of Kenora is Northwestern Ontario’s second largest centre and is a commercial hub for the region with a population of 16,500 permanent residents, which swells to over 35,000 in the summer months, including seasonal residents and visitors. The surrounding area encompasses Shoal Lake to the east (Manitoba border), Minaki and Redditt to the north and Sioux Narrows, Nestor Falls to the southeast.

Downtown Kenora has just gone through a major revitalization and sports a whole new look, starting with a traffic-moving roundabout on the west side of the city centre and continuing on with extensive landscaping and streetscaping throughout the downtown core that celebrates the historic role of Kenora and its unique waterfront location.

Lake of the Woods and the surrounding areas comprise one of the natural wonders of North America. With over 14,000 islands and more than 105,000 kilometers (65,000 miles) of shoreline – more shoreline than Lake Superior – the waterways of the lake and the surrounding wilderness offer anglers and hunters an endless variety of opportunities to experience the wonder of the region.
