The hamlet of Minaki is located about 45 minutes north of Kenora and Lake of the Woods, via Highway 596 off the Kenora Bypass (Highway 17A). Area lakes and rivers include the Winnipeg and English River systems, Gunn Lake, Pistol Lake, Sand Lake and Roughrock. Fish species in these waterways include walleye (pickerel), northern pike (jackfish), bass, yellow perch and muskie. Minaki also has wonderful cross country skiing, mountain bike trails and rock climbing.

The communities of Sioux Narrows and Nestor Falls are located midway between Kenora and the border town of Fort Frances, on Highway 71 North. Both are situated on Lake of the Woods and are surrounded by a number of smaller lakes, such as Berry Lake, Dryberry Lake, Andy Lake, Blindfod Lake, Kakagi Lake, Big Pine Lake, Caliper Lake and others too numerous to mention.

Longbow Lake is located 8 miles east of Kenora with access off Highway 17 and Highway 71. It is approximately 15 miles long and one mile wide at its widest point, with an average depth of 22 feet and up to 70 feet deep in some places. Lake of the Woods is accessible by boat from Longbow Lake by means of a beltway over a water level control dam. Fish species in Longbow Lake comprise of walleye (pickerel), northern pike (jackfish), muskie, smallmouth bass, rock bass, yellow perch, white sucker, lake herring and burbot.

Black Sturgeon Lake is located 3 miles northeast of Kenora.and is accessible from the west via several roads off Highway 658 (Redditt Road) and from the east via several roads off Highway 659. The Winnipeg River is accessible by boat from Lower Black Sturgeon via the Black Sturgeon River and a manual roller system. Lower Black Sturgeon is approximately 8 miles long and 1.5 miles at its widest point. Average water depth is 40 feet, with the deepest area being approximately 100 feet. Fish species in Black Sturgeon Lake are walleye (pickerel), northern pike (jackfish), smallmouth bass, rock bass, yellow perch and whitefish.

The Winnipeg River begins its flow north of Kenora, through Minaki and on to Lake Winnipeg. This impressive waterway comprises the river and many lakes, including Middle Lake, Muriel Lake, Gunn Lake, Pistol Lake, Little Sand, Big Sand and Roughrock. The river is accessible via several roads in the Kenora area and off Highway 596 and Highway 658 (Redditt Road). Some of the fish species available in the Winnipeg River include walleye (pickerel), northern pike (jackfish), yellow perch and whitefish.

Lake of the Woods is over 70 miles long, approximately 59 miles wide, contains over 14,500 islands and 65,000 miles of shoreline. Lake of the Woods is fed by the Rainy River, Shoal Lake, Kakagi Lake and other smaller rivers, and drains into the Winnipeg River. The average depth of Lake of the Woods is 40 feet, but is 210 feet deep in some places. Fish species in Lake of the Woods include walleye (pickerel), northern pike (jackfish), small mouth bass, large mouth bass, rock bass, yellow perch, lake trout, whitefish, muskie, crappie and burbot.
